Psalm 91- A Prayer of Someone who has taken refuge in the Lord

You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High,

who abide in the shade of the Almighty,

Say to the LORD, “My refuge and fortress,

my God in whom I trust.”

He will rescue you from the fowler’s snare,

from the destroying plague,

He will shelter you with his pinions,

and under his wings you may take refuge;

his faithfulness is a protecting shield.

You shall not fear the terror of the night

nor the arrow that flies by day,

Nor the pestilence that roams in darkness,

nor the plague that ravages at noon.

Though a thousand fall at your side,

ten thousand at your right hand,

near you it shall not come.

You need simply watch;

the punishment of the wicked you will see.

Because you have the LORD for your refuge

and have made the Most High your stronghold,

No evil shall befall you,

no affliction come near your tent.

For he commands his angels with regard to you,

to guard you wherever you go.

With their hands they shall support you,

lest you strike your foot against a stone.

You can tread upon the asp and the viper,

trample the lion and the dragon.

Because he clings to me I will deliver him;

because he knows my name I will set him on high.

He will call upon me and I will answer;

I will be with him in distress;

I will deliver him and give him honor.

With length of days I will satisfy him,

and fill him with my saving power.

Psalm 91

The whole of Psalm 91 had to be included to show you the full impact of its words. While many here are bracing for Hurricane Irma by panicking and trusting in  our human government, I am trusting in the Lord. Yes I am physically prepared with food, water and the bagging of our most precious items, I am also prepared in spirit and know the Lord is with me.

It is a dangerous prospect to be someone without God. I worry for those who are clinging to humans. The authorities here in Broward County have been clear- there will be no emergency services during the storm. To whom will the many without God cling to? For these souls I pray that on this day, they shall see the salvation of the Lord.

In the peace and calm of His shelter, I prepare my heart for the coming of the earth’s rage. Our human race wastes many days in fighting over insignificant nonsense in the selfishness that blind men have. They promote evil agendas, sometimes without knowing. They are unaware of the world around them. The refugee cries out and they turn a blind eye. Without God, we are nothing.

Now is the time to pray for the conversion of souls. For people to look to God for answers. He will show His glory amidst the storm:

“He shall stand firm and shepard his flock by the strength of the Lord, in the majestic name of the Lord, his God; And they shall remain, for now his greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth.” Micah 5:3

It is time to turn to Christ. The waters are no longer still, time is not on our side. The waves they will come, but consider His rest. His head upon a pillow as the storms rage. For we are to remain in Him, and Him in us.

It is a comforting measure to know that I am not afraid, for God tells me hundreds of times in his Holy Scripture to Fear Not. In this life I am not afraid, for He is with me. My hope is in the promise of spending eternity with Him, so I am not afraid of human death. There is no other way of life that promises this. It is the hope, the purpose, and center of my life. I am not worried about the eye of the storm for HE is in it. He is with me, and I shall abide in the shelter of the Almighty all the days of my life.

May Christ keep you, may you turn to Him for hope. For there is no hope in the hands of ordinary men. This is beyond evangelization, this is the truth. For who will you turn to when the waters rage and your home is no longer there? The kingdom of God is here, now for all to come to the Living God. You no longer have to wait, your messiah is here. Look away from your shutters, your water and canned food. Your safe place is in the Lord.

  1. I am praying for you Melissa and everyone in the path of the storm. I, too, feel sorry for those who only have humans to cling to. I will join you in praying for those souls and also that, “…they shall see the salvation of the Lord.” as you said. May the Lord bless and keep you!

  2. Beautiful words, my dear, Melissa. I can’t imagine what is going through every mind in the path of Irma. Like you say, the only hope is that God is with you = even in the eye of the storm. I pray too that those who still need to know who God is and the power he possess, will turn to him for refuge. May their hearts burn for the Lord even when the storms pass. We are with you in this disaster and pray that God will keep you all safe!

  3. Amen Melissa—
    You are His and He is yours…just hold on to that.
    Just got off the phone with my cousin—storm shutters up and she’ll seal them in in the morning. No one is allowed on the roads come 8AM
    Our Governor is now warning all of Georgia.
    I’ve been to the grocery store, gotten extra gas cans filled and so now we wait.
    My aunt always use to tell me she’d buy Pepperidge Farm cookies only during a hurricane, so in her memory today, I bought a box 🙂
    Hang in there and remember Who your calm in the storm actually is!!!

    1. Yes! Ah pepperidge farm cookies, what memories! Nanny loved Entemmen’s mini chocolate chip cookies 😊. We are still prepping our precious memories, albums, pictures etc. It is very emotional, but I’ve been led from the beginning not to leave. I am calm as the storm is almost upon us…

      1. My cousin isn’t leaving either.
        She’s weathered these things before so she’ll just see another one through.
        That’s the real Florida girls in you!!!
        I’m not worried.
        As Jullian of Norwich reminds us, “all shall be well, all shall be well, all manner of thing shall be well”

  4. Melissa,

    You know I love you girl, and you and your family have not left my heart nor prayers all day. If anyone can “weather” this, it is you. When it is over, I am sure to draw courage and strength from your testimony. I wish I was there to place my arms around you. Just feel them anyways. I love you with all of my heart and soul. Be safe, stay strong, and will be waiting to hear from you. LOVE AND GOD BLESS, SR

    1. I am crying reading this right now, I love you sister. There is a lot to draw on this experience. We are securing the remainder of our things, telling our children to pick out those cherished few things and pack them up for safety. I am ok with whatever the outcome- I feel closer to God now more than ever. I should be anxious but I am calm in the arms of my loving God. As soon as I am able I will post after the storm. Do not be afraid for I am with you, I hear the Lord!

  5. Hey Melissa,

    Just wanted you to know at five this morning prayers were going up for you, your family, your home and all those in Florida. In my heart, in my prayers and taking you to Mass with me tonight. I love you, I am hugging you, I am praying for you. God Bless, SR

    1. Yes take me with you dear friend! Mass is cancelled and my heart is hurting for our Lord! Say a prayer during the Eucharist for me so that I may partake in my spirit!

      1. I will ask Him Melissa, if He can use this wretched soul of mine to get to yours to go to you. To give to you all the graces, mercies, and comfort that my soul would receive. I go to Mass at 6:00 central time and usually receive Holy Communion about 6:45. Be expecting Him. I love you and God Bless, SR
